Driving Electric in San Diego

Economics - Time & Money

Driving an electric vehicle saves time and money.

Time spent pumping gas

Time saving might not be obvious without a bit of thought. Consider the time taken to fill a car with gas.

First, there is the time taken to visit a gas station. At a minimum there is the short detour when the station adjacent to the road already being traveled. At worst there is additional time when you seek out a station with advantageous pricing. In the latter case, there is actually an additional monetary cost for miles driven out of your way.

Second, there is the time needed to actually pump the gas. Even when paying at the pump, this takes several minutes. Weather, time-of-day, neighborhood, etc. can make this time feel like an eternity. Additional time is required if you interact with an attendant.

Third is the time spent worrying about getting gas. Often you're tired after a long work day and don't feel like making a pit stop even if you know you are low on gas. Then, the next morning as you're running late, getting gas is yet another obstacle in arriving on time.

Time saved by charging

Compare the time spent pumping gas to the almost negligible time typically involved with charging. It takes just a few seconds to plug in. The actual charging takes place unattended. The additional seconds needed to unplug are also negligible. All this ususally takes place within the comfort of a home or workplace garage. Unless you must use public charging, no additional time is consumed getting to the fuel.
